There are currently several ways to obtain Portuguese nationality

HOW CAN I OBTAIN PORTUGUESE NATIONALITY?

In general, dual nationality can be obtained through a declaration made by children, grandchildren, spouses and partners of Portuguese citizens/nationals, indirectly also by great-grandchildren, by time of residence in Portugal, by investment activities, by birth in Portuguese territory Portuguese, as well as exceptionally by descendants of Sephardic Jews with special ties to Portugal.

  1. Being born abroad to parents of Portuguese nationality.

  3. For being married or in a stable union with a Portuguese.

You can apply for Portuguese nationality under these conditions and be considered Portuguese by birth if born abroad; has a Portuguese mother or a Portuguese father; declares that he intends to acquire Portuguese nationality.


The most important assumption is the proof of filiation to the Portuguese father/mother, that is, that the applicant has been registered by the Portuguese father/mother before reaching the age of majority.

Portuguese nationality for grandchildren of Portuguese is viable even if the applicant was not born in Portugal or resides in a European country and if his father/mother, son of Portuguese, has died before. This will depend on various factors that are identified in the analysis of specific documents. You can apply for Portuguese nationality under these conditions if:


  1. Has a Portuguese grandmother or a Portuguese grandfather who has not lost Portuguese nationality
  2. You declare that you wish to acquire Portuguese nationality
  3. Prove that you are connected to the Portuguese community through an official document that proves knowledge of the Portuguese language.

For being married or in a stable union with a Portuguese

It is possible for a foreigner who is married or in a stable union to obtain Portuguese nationality, provided that:


  1. Be married or living in a stable formal union for more than 3 years with a Portuguese citizen (the request must be made at the time of the unit);
  2. Having the relationship previously recognized/registered in Portugal (through Registration/Transcription of the Marriage in the Portuguese Civil Registry or Judicial Recognition of the de facto marriage); Y
  3. Demonstrate that you have effective links with the Portuguese national community.


*As a result of the lastAs a modification of the Nationality Law, in some cases, the proof of effective ties with Portugal will not be necessary when, for example, the marriage/union has been celebrated for more than 6 years or when they have children in common who are already Portuguese. In this possibility, the links are presumed, that is, they are automatically recognized by the Portuguese Government.

Portuguese nationality by residence

Another option for those who wish to acquire Portuguese nationality is reside legally with a residence permit in Portugal for at least 5 years . This hypothesis is especially recommended for those who wish to settle in Portugal and who do not have close relatives who are Portuguese. This is the case, for example, for highly-skilled professionals, students, passive income holders or investors.


Foreigners who decide to invest in Portugal, after completing 5 years of residence, can also obtain Portuguese nationality.
