Regulated in the Article 21 of the Civil CodeIt's a concessiongracious(a gift from the State) granted by Royal Decree. It is reserved for cases where the interests of Spain or humanitarian reasons justify bypassing the usual bureaucracy.

Historically, the most common profiles include:


  • Elite athletes:So that they can compete with the Spanish national team.
  • Victims of terrorismor tragedies.
  • Cultural Personalities(writers, artists).
  • Humanitarian causes:Like the recent case of the Nicaraguan exiles.
  • Sephardim expelled from Spain.


In 2015, 4,271 Letters of Naturalization were granted to Sephardim, representing the largest number of nationality grants through this route.

Requirements of Exceptionality

For your application to be successful in 2026, your application must be impeccable. We work on three pillars:

Regulations

Spanish nationality is acquired by naturalization, granted at the discretion of the government through a Royal Decree, when the interested party has exceptional circumstances.

In the case of naturalization, it must be taken into account that It is a discretionary measure, not a right of the applicant. and is not subject to the general rules of administrative procedure.


What is meant by exceptional circumstances?


  1. Relevant contributions to SpainElite athletes, artists, scientists, or people who have made significant contributions to the country.
  2. Personal or historical tiesPeople with historical roots in Spain, such as Sephardim or descendants of Spaniards.
  3. Humanitarian or political reasonsRefugees, asylum seekers or individuals in situations of extreme vulnerability.

  4. It has been considered on numerous occasions that such exceptional circumstances exist in Sephardic Jews; in fact, on October 2, 2015 and in August 2016, two Royal Decrees were published granting nationality by naturalization to more than 5,000 people, including several Stratego clients.

Documentation


  • Literal birth certificate, legalized or apostilled, and where applicable, translated.
  • Criminal record certificate from the country of origin, legalized and translated (only for those over 18 years of age)
  • Criminal record certificate from the Central Registry of Convicted Persons in the case of residents in Spain over 18 years of age.
  • Original marriage certificate, legalized or apostilled and, where applicable, translated.
  • Documents proving the existence of exceptional circumstances. In the case of descendants of Sephardim, the certificate from the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE) will be especially relevant.
  • Other documents that the interested party deems appropriate.
